Watercolor Mood Boards- Tool or Art Form?

As a artist and class creator, I’m always thinking about what new things you might need to learn. Usually that requires me thinking about my own journey, and what helped me most at the beginning. This time I did it backwards, and shared something I discovered much later in my journey. It’s a tool that I also consider it’s own art form, and it changed my creative process forever. What is it? Mood boards.

I know mood boards don’t sound exciting or remarkable, but honestly, they are a best-kept secret that many of us could benefit from. They are currently mostly used by professional artists and designers, but anyone could benefit so much from them. So I created a class I’m calling Watercolor Mood Boards: Rethink Your Process.

Honestly, mood boards are a best-kept secret that many of us could benefit from.

How are they used out in the world? Art directors and licensing companies use them to give their artists direction on a project, calling them "artist briefs." Graphic designers create them to help their clients stay on track with branding assets, calling them brand boards. Color experts use them to share color palettes and trends. I've even used this technique to help me better unify my Instagram feed, but essentially it's all the same concept!

I wanted you to be able to capture the power of clarity that mood boards can bring you. They are a genius way to organize your thoughts, convey ideas, and tell visual stories.

I want you to be able to capture the power of clarity that mood boards can bring you.

While I was teaching this class, I told my own story of what an average day is like living in the desert from a nature perspective. I showed the mountains at sunset I look at everyday, the hummingbirds I see whizzing by from spring to fall, and lovely desert botanicals.

At first, this topic seemed trivial, and even a little boring. After all, I see these things each and every day. However, in asking my online friends and followers, I found that they long to know what it's like to live here. Who knew?

That means that your life could be very interesting to someone else. It's hard to imagine I know, but it's soooo true. That’s why it’s important to tell our own stories because, as I learn more and more each day, they inspire others. What could be more meaningful than doing that for someone else? That’s what keeps me painting, creating classes, writing newsletters and blog posts, and all the other things I do. I get to make a difference in someone else’s journey, and that is everything. Hopefully, I get to do that for YOU!

It’s important to tell our own stories because they inspire others, and mood boards are a simple way to tell your stories.

Mood boards are a simple and beautiful way to share your story with others. And now I'm showing you how to create mood boards in watercolors, just to up the fun factor. The possibilities for this project are endless. Plus, you will learn how to better organize your thoughts, which lead to better visual projects. We are visual thinkers after all, right?

It’s an easy step-by-step process that can be used for just about any topic you like. It can be used for your creative business, or just for fun. The best part? They are so easy to create once you know how!

Mood boards are perfect for visual thinkers like artists and designers.

In this class, I’ll teach you the anatomy of a mood board, give you lots of my own color palette and mood board layout resources to save you time, then show you how to paint and assemble your mood board. I even share my own process for making custom watercolor stickers! I love making these and I can’t wait to show you how.  You can watch this class in just over an hour, but this tool can be used for a lifetime.

Do you want to learn this simple but effective skill to boost your creative toolbox, gain more clarity with your projects, and communicate more effectively? Join me in the Watercolor Mood Boards: Rethink Your Process class for some fun and relaxing watercolor painting and light collaging to build a beautiful mood board you can share on social media, hang on your wall, or give as a gift.
