So, what is the business of creativity? How does it work? For years I have been asking myself that same question. Like the fountain of youth or the mysteries of life, I think this issue has eluded many of us. Then, one day while mulling it over, it hit me like a ton of bricks. There is no secret, no mystery. Creativity is a living, breathing thing that resides within each one of us.
Okay, you say, if it lives within me, why doesn't it cooperate when I tell it to? I have a schedule, you say, and I get creative block at the worst of times. We have all had this happen and it's never a good time, but there is relief in sight. We just have to understand how it works.
For example, if creativity is an entity inside each of us, it has rules of engagement. You know, like rules of the universe. There's just no way around it. Believe me I have tried... However, if we could learn to understand these rules and live by them, maybe, just maybe, we could harness our creative juices in a workable fashion.
If we each need food and rest, then maybe our creativity needs these things too. I know, I know, now you think I'm crazy, but just bear with me a little longer. What if we are starving and over-working our creativity. After all, we are surmising it is a living, breathing thing. Does it not deserve respect and consideration? We expect those things, but then turn around and want our creativity to jump through hoops for us.
Maybe our creativity needs a spa day because it just came up with an entire ad campaign, or illustration series. Maybe it needs a break just like we do and if it doesn't get one, it crashes. Maybe I'm nuts, but give it a try. You may be surprised by the results.
